Below I have copied a personal view of this years championships by Ian Smith, MOD competitor.  It is a copy of the report he is using for the MOD sports magazine.

Swimming Championships

For the second year running the CSSC National Swimming, Diving and Life Saving Championships were held at Ponds Forge International Sports Center, Sheffield. With the pool being one of the quickest in the country the stage was set for some outstanding performances.

With a staggering 36 new championship record set over the two days, the standard of swimming within the CSSC seems to be rapidly improving. Although the MOD struggled to keep pace with the likes of HASSRA (Health & Social Security) & IRSA, (Inland Revenue) they still achieved 51 top 3 finishes with ten of those being first placed. Congratulations to

B. Gillingham (men’s masters 100 IM – 126.69)

                        (men’s masters 50 free – 31.52)

                        (men’s masters 50 back 40.00)

A.     Dickinson  (women’s masters 50 breast – 42.53)

(women’s masters 50 free – 32.53)

(women’s masters 50 fly – 37.74)

A. Murray        (women’s style swimming – 66.50)

                        (women’s spring board – 139.30)

                        (women’s firm board – 130.60)

J. Zinkus            (women’s masters 50 fly – 39.80)

B. Chard             (men’s masters 50 fly – 38.62)

The men’s and women’s overall champion went to M. Douglas and S. Hill of HASSRA. For the major trophies the MOD achieved third places in the Women’s Masters, Women’s Open Team and Men’s Open Team. The Aggregate open team winner went to HASSRA followed by IRSA in second place and the MOD in third place. With 16 teams turning out for the Championships the MOD didn’t perform too badly coming in third. With regard to my swimming I managed a 2nd, 3rd and two 4th places in the open 100 free, 100 breast, 50 free and 200 free respectively

On a personal note I’d like to thank all those involved in running the Championships. The two days ran with relative few problems, and all seem to enjoy themselves, even if age is starting to affect there swimming ability. With regard to the next Championships, perhaps the introduction of a younger masters age group (19-24) may encourage more swimmers and also help to maintain there interest after leaving age group swimming. Also maybe the swapping of the 50 and 200 free may help to reduce the distance swimmers have to cover on the Friday afternoons session.
