REPORT 1999

IRSA ANGLERS HOOK TOP TROPHIES AT CSSC NOSAC

The CSSC National Open Shore Angling Championships took place at St. Andrews Quay, Hull on 20th November 1999.  Fifty four anglers representing various Departments, Areas and local CSSC Clubs from all over the country took part and of these twenty seven weighed in.  The Royal Mail, Prison Service and Inland Revenue Sports Association were all well supported as usual with many new faces being welcomed for the first time.

The match began at twelve with a packed lunch being delivered to the angler’s peg shortly afterwards.  The three stewards had a larger area than expected to cover and were soon rushing off to weigh in fish.  Having stewards with scales on hand meant that all fish could be returned to the water alive.  The first fish to be landed was a flounder and thirty to forty more of the same species followed this.  Although the venue has produced cod in numbers over the past three years and even the previous day for some reason they did not show at all during the match.

Back at the competition hotel the prizes and trophies were awarded by James Marshall, Greenock Area (Royal Mail –retired) our elder statesman (and pools divided among the winners.  There being no round fish caught the round fish pool was divided between the winners of the heaviest flat and heaviest bag.

Local IRSA angler Neil Robinson took the heaviest flat prize with a flounder which had weighed in at one pound and half an ounce, just a shade smaller than the winners shield.

Nigel Conlon, IRSA, Liverpool had the best success of the day with a total bag of three pounds two and a half ounces to take the top prize of the day.

We also held the customary ‘IRSA Shield’ fun team competition which anglers enter on the day if they wish (and most of them do).  The IRSA will be pleased that the shield they donated will be back home again this year as one of the four IRSA teams made up of Neil Robinson (Hull) Nigel Conlon and Tony Lynch (Merseyside) combined to take the heaviest aggregate bag.

Photos of the two winners were featured in the CSSC Sports & Leisure Bulletin, Issue 17, February 2000. (see photos here!)

With two of the trophies going over to Merseyside they will not have to travel far next year to be presented as we are returning on November 18th 2000 to Otterspool to hold our championships.

A good weekend was had by all, I am told, with special thanks for the support given by Hull CSSC for the ‘Millennium’ cups and to Yorkshire and Humberside CSSC for sponsoring the rather tasty packed lunches.  Thanks also to everyone else including, competitors, stewards, wives, girlfriends, sons and fathers who were prepared to help out over the weekend to make this another quality competition and excellent social event.

I hate to end on a downer but two cars were broken in whilst the presentations were in flow and three anglers lost a great deal of fishing equipment and other personal items.  Perhaps it is a good time to warn other sportsmen and women that although the CSSC has insurance for all CSSC events this is only to cover CSSC equipment and you should have enough of your own insurance to cover your own sporting equipment and other personal items.  Be warned!
